Roots Watch: Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles

Out of Boston, Sarah Borges and The Broken Singles play two dates at this year’s Rhythm & Roots Festival - Saturday May 6th in The Pumphouse for a Sunday afternoon show (3pm, tickets €12) and Paris Texas on Monday night (9pm, tickets €12). The new album, ‘Diamonds in the Dark’ is likely to form part of an extensive setlist, the upcoming release due to hit the shelves on June 12 and they’ve got a good single in the shape of ‘The Day We Met’ available on the official site. Upbeat, catchy, great country rock feel, very very Shania Twain-esque in the vocal delivery (Sarah) but its the kind of music where you can see everyone up on their feet dancing for the night.

And I’m not a country music fan by any stretch of the imagination. Speaking about the new single, which beams a happy sense of energy,

“I’m usually more comfortable doing songs that are sad or a little pissed than totally happy ones, but I was in a better place writing [‘The Day We Met’] and that just flowed immediately,” she explains. “When I first started writing, I was a little more self-conscious of certain things, certain topics, certain sounds. But you need to put that behind you if you want to really come up with something you’re happy with.

Sarah and the band have two albums under their belts now (counting the upcoming June release), starting back with the critically acclaimed release of ‘Silver City’ in 2005. Country Standard Time described the album as a “dynamite debut” and “very much a homerun” with the album also featuring the mandolin talents of Jimmy Ryan with Steve Malone and Mike Castellana (now part of the regular stage setup) duelling away on pedal steel.

You’ve two opportunities to catch Sarah and the band this coming weekend, I’d consider them for the Monday show in Paris Texas to wind up the festival (given that I’ve plans for the Sunday) but you should consider them as one for your own Roots Watch list.
