SKYLIGHT

The band were born out of strange coincidences and occurances. “Do you have a spare drumkit?” is a strange question to ask someone on their late night doorstep if you haven’t seen them since age 11. After this surreal moment drummer Niall (pronounced ‘Neil’ - don’t ask) and Brian (guitars) began scratching their heads to start something. Since there was no clear idea as to what the band should sound like classically-trained russian pianist Xenya (pronounced ‘Zen-ya’) was asked in a schoolyard into rehearsing out of curiosity. Brian decided to be the singer but quickly severed that idea once the initial tape recording made him feel bad.

Tim (vocals/guitars) came into the picture through a mutual friend of “the band” and after a discussion over which song on Siamese Dream was best (’Mayonaise’ it was agreed) the question was asked, the answer rejoiced and the band began. In it’s initial formation skylight began to play small shows in Dublin City (once on a stage made of wooden ballets Tim’s singing was interrupted mid-song by the support band’s singer accusing him of ‘jumper theft’). Now with a certain xenophobia the band took to Sun Studios to record their first demo safely (receiving overwhelming support from Phantom FM- making the ‘A’ list for two weeks, charting highly in both request chart and band chart and getting generous airplay from Dave Fanning on his 2FM show).

However, then-bassist (and still close friend) Phillipe (pronounced ‘Fil-eep’) decided to turn left as the band turned right. Skylight now set a criteria for a new member:bass playing, good singing voice and violin skills. Literally a couple of days later Brian was talking music with a stranger/co-worker in an unfamiliar branch of a heartless corporation. Without mentioning the recent departure he heard “yeah…..I play bass and sing a bit….oh and I play violin. I really miss playing in a band since I moved to Dublin”(these are the moments films are made of). Dave was given the Sun Studio recordings and smiled so much that the band found it hard to say no. However, they realized they knew too many ‘Daves’ so he was shortened to ‘Dav’.

Skylight now began to shed their teenage sound and began developing different sounds as each song came about. Now equipped with harmonies and violins the other members began to learn/incorporate new instruments/devices such as laptops, organs, flute, drum machines, speech samples and strange pedals. The band began to play supports and headlines in Whelans, The Village and T.B.M.C and quickly gained a modest following. Also Niall bumped into a John he once knew and built a recording studio to help the band- Garden’s End. 2004 saw Skylight begin recording for their debut single due for release in September 2005

79Cortinaz

Electric Hym, the latest track from 79Cortinaz has been launched and already has garnered some national radio airplay. Available only as a Radio release, the single features two distinctly different versions of Electric Hym. Like the debut top 20 single, Deirdres Song, Electric Hym was recorded and produced by the band in their infamously creaky studio, The Shed. If you wish to hear the single, request it from your favourite radio DJ.
