B & The Honey Boys Tonight

B & The Honeyboys are a bluesy, funky, R&B outfit formed in early 2006 by Kieran McEvoy (aka K.J. Mac) and Aileen Mythen (B). Sharing a love of Blues and all things related, the two, both involved in other projects and activities originally formed the band as an outlet for playing Blues standards in bars and clubs. Since then B & The Honeyboys have become a more serious concern and have recently recorded an album of original songs, written by B and K.J.
K.J. Mac hails from Dublin and has been a professional musician for many years, playing lead guitar and singing with many different bands and solo artists. He lived and worked as a musician for 8 years in New York City, where he played lead guitar, sang and contributed songwriting to bands such as the Sony signed roots act, ‘Naked Grape’, Indie Folk rocker, Melissa Sheehan and Electra Records glam rockers, ‘Smashed Gladys’ among others. On returning home to Ireland in 1996 he recorded on his sister Eleanor McEvoy’s columbia Record’s album, ‘What’s Following me’ and toured the U.S.A, Europe and of course Ireland with Eleanor and her band. Since then he co-formed ‘The Rose Ponies’ with Australian singer-songwriter, Chiara Browne, played session guitar with numerous bands and artists and recently released an E.P. featuring four of his own songs.
Wexford born B is a singer extraordinaire with a Bluesy voice and feel which bely her tender years. She has been performing on stage in one way or another from the age of six, encouraged by her musician parents, who gigged extensively around Ireland with their country band in the 1970’s. Along with singing B has an equal passion for acting and is a graduate of Dublin’s prestigious Gaiety School of Acting. Since graduating she has performed all over the country with many different theatre companies and sung with many different bands performing myriad styles of music in venues including The Olympia, The Gaiety and bars and clubs the width and breadth of Ireland.
B & The Honeyboys are soon to release their debut album, following their Dublin launch in The Madison, Rathmines August 9th @ 9pm. Mixing their aforementioned love of Blues with funk, Rock n’ Roll and even Gospel influences, their songs inject a freshness and vitality into the Blues/Roots genre, sounding at once traditional and contemporary. The two other members of the band are Shane Atlas on drums and Paddy Joyce on bass.
The debut album from B & The Honeyboys features eight original compositions from the pen of band founders, B (a.k.a. Aileen Mythen) and K.J. Mac and a cover of an R. Stevenson song originally made famous by Nina Simone. Steeped in Blues, funk, R&B and roots music in general, the pair, now residents of Gorey, Co. Wexford, have put together an album of contemporary Blues songs that manage to sound at once traditional and modern.
Recorded throughout March, April and May in Silverwood Studios, Co. Wicklow, this album will delight fans of roots music with songs varying from the catchy, stomping Blues/Rock, ‘I miss you’ to the jazz tinged, Fee Fi Fo Fum’ and the wah-wah driven funk of ‘Hang My Head’.
Check them out TONIGHT in Cleere’s from 9:30pm.
