Super Extra Prize Winners

Super Extra Bonus Party, as featured recently on Sound System Podcast 41, were announced tonight as the 2007 winners of the Choice Music Prize, the award following a great year for the band on the back of their self titled release, ‘Super Extra Bonus Party’.
Once again, I think, the Choice Music Prize and judged have trumped up another top class act and another surprise to the masses. The SEBP crew topped the judges voting ahead of Adrian Crowley (Long Distance Swimmer), early favourite Cathy Davey (Tales Of Silversleeve), Delorentos (In Love With Detail), Dry County (Unexpected Falls), The Flaws (Achieving Vagueness), David Geraghty (Kill Your Darlings), Kila (Gambler’s Ballet), Roisin Murphy (Overpowered) and Stanley Super 800 (Louder & Clearer).
No doubt there’ll be a flurry of activity from Irish music bloggers there on the night but from ourselves at KKM, fair play to Super Extra Bonus Party, well deserved and here’s to a terrific 2008.
You can can the band in action in Kilkenny this weekend as they take to the stage in Eddie Murphy’s, Thomastown, with Band On An Island and New York Fashion Week as part of the Leap Party.
Don’t Be Shy, Get Talking On The Forums

Actually, I should say that there’s a reason registrations were shy the last week or so…. I broke the forum registration and never spotted it until Cormac (Dirty Epics, playing in Thomastown this Friday night) flagged it for me - cheers dude.
The Dirty Epics are out touring at the moment, hitting Eddie Murphy’s on Friday night, Wicklow on Saturday (Dead Clubs Music Festival, Katie Gallaghers), Dublin’s Crawdaddy on Sunday before playing a few dates in March between The Roisin Dubh (Galway, 4th), McHughs (Drogheda, 10th), The Stables (Mullingar, 29th) and Cuba in Galway at the start of April.
Anyway, forum registrations are evidently working again so why not join the 900+ registered forum heads and if you’re coming to Kilkenny, gigging in Kilkenny or trying to flog your gig / band / cd / ep / single / release to people from Kilkenny then click here to sign up and get pimping!
Get started, register on the boards…

So the Meteor’s were on last night. A few surprises if you ask me. Didn’t expect Aslan (priced at 8/1 yesterday morning) to get Best Irish Band and certainly didn’t think Paddy Casey would nab Best Album, but what can you do eh?
Here’s the list of winners from last night…
- Best National DJ - Ray Foley Today FM
- Best Regional DJ - Keith Cunningham Red FM
- Best Irish Band - Aslan
- Best Irish Male - Duke Special
- Best Irish Female - Cathy Davey
- Best Irish Pop Act - Westlife
- Best Irish Album - Paddy Casey with Addicted to Company
- Best Irish Live Performance - The Blizzards
- Lifetime Achievement Award - The Saw Doctors
- Best Irish Folk Traditional - Damien Dempsey
- Best International Live Performance - Muse
- Best International Male - Bruce Springsteen
- Best International Female - Amy Winehouse
- Best International Album - Arcade Fire with Neon Bible
- Best International Band - Radiohead
- Humantiarian Award - Mary Donohoe

- Hope for 2008 Meteor Award - Ham Sandwich
Is the nod for Cathy Davey any indication she’ll grab the Choice Music Prize?
Majella Murphy At The Meteors
February 15, 2008 by Ken McGuire

Kilkenny native (now living in the big smoke) Majella Murphy is amongst the nominees at tonight’s 2008 Meteor Music Awards in the RDS. She’s in the non-public voting category of ‘Best Irish Folk Traditional’ and finds her name in lights alongside Tommy Fleming, Damien Dempsey, Kila, Moving Hearts and Sharon Shannon.
Certainly a tough group for it’s genre.
The Meteors kick off tonight and we’ll publish a list of winners later tonight or tomorrow…
If you can’t catch up with her at the Meteors (if she’ll be there!) you can see her live in Kilkenny next Saturday night at Springhill, tickets 15 euro from Rollercoaster.
Packing For Another Blog Awards Session In Dublin

KilkennyMusic.com has been shortlisted for Best Music Blog at the 2008 Irish Blog Awards. Following on from our short listing last year (final five) we’re delighted to have the blog amongst the short list nominees this year. There are a few more blogs this year than last year but having made it through the initial nomination phase and the long list phase to arrive at the short list phase it looks like we’re packing our bags for another road trip to Dublin.
On a personal note, I’ve also had kenmc.com short listed amongst more fantastic blogs in the Best Technology category, while Ross has seen his photoblog wind it’s way on to the short list for Best Photoblog.
For more on the blog awards see here, or check the short lists for all categories.
We’re delighted to be included on the roll call this year along side the following (majority of which are regular reads of mine).
- nialler9
- Cheebah
- House is a Feeling
- mp3hugger
- The Torture Garden
- Asleep on the Compost Heap
- The Red Scrapbook
- Matt Vinyl
- The Indie Hour
- French Letter
- Off Her Rocker
- Stuart Bailie
- I Prefer the Obscure Mix
Last year’s winner went to Monsieur Nialler9 and this year’s Best Music award is being sponsored by DownloadMusic.ie.
Admittedly last year we didn’t stay around the awards after the ceremony, we were talked out at that stage and also had a gig to catch at 10pm over in The Lower Deck. This year, with the extension of the short list, new music bloggers and a host of new faces turning up at the awards, we should be in for a right night’s entertainment.
