Yesterday saw Atrax Mantis crowned winners of the 2007 Battle Of The Bands. After a highly impressive final featuring four great acts - Atrax Mantis, Desecrate, Decadation and Pitch Black - it was Atrax who topped the judges poll.
The KilkennyMusic.com crew of myself (Ken McGuire), Alan Dawson, Ross Costigan and Mickey ‘Boo’ Keogh were judges for the entirety of this year’s competition, joined for the final by event organiser Andrew McGuinness.
On the draw of the day, Atrax were first to take to the stage, kicking things off not long after half past four, followed in hot pursuit by Desecrate, Decadation and Pitch Black. Each of the bands pulled it out of the bag on the day which was fantastic to see - any nerves in performance from the heats were well and truly laid to rest and the energy and enthusiasm showed from all. It was half seven before we got to vacate The Zoo, retiring to Cleere’s across the road to make the decisions and add up the points for the day.
Two last minute prizes were added on the day with KilkennyMusic.com’s Ross Costigan offering two full photoshoots for the overall winners and the winner of ‘Best Song’ which will be recorded as a two-track EP in Broderick’s studios here in Kilkenny. The best song went to Decadation for ‘Retribution’, the band’s second time in the competition, having seriously upped their game from last year. Decadation also picked up the ‘bands band’ award, as selected by members of each of the other bands in the competitiong. For their efforts they’ll collect a €500 voucher from Adlib Music later today.
As winners, Atrax Mantis walk away with €1,000 worth of equipment from Essaness Music, recording time in the Mill Studio in Kilkenny, a €700 web development package from local web design and marketing group Event Ireland and a professional photography package from Ross Costigan at oss237.com.
