Cats & Cats & Cats On Their Way
September 28, 2008 by Ken McGuire

Problems At The Pancake House return to Cleere’s again this coming Saturday October 4th with three more acts taking to the stage - Cats & Cats & Cats (UK), Moses Moorhous and Indie Kids Can’t Dance.
Cats and Cats and Cats stagger their trademark brand of catchy math rock with folk inspired post-rock sections. Starting in early 2005 when friends Ben (Vocals, Guitar) and Tom (Bass, Backing Vocals) met Doug (Drums) at the University of Hertfordshire. Their debut EP Victorialand picked up some great reviews and the attention of the UK experimental rock underground. Never being ones to grow musically stagnant, Cats expanded their line up to include Adam (Guitar) and Eve (Violin) to record 2006’s mini album Sweet Drunk Everyone. The new direction split opinion with a weighting towards a fuller, more ambitious post rock sound. Extensive touring followed with the band sharing stages with their heroes Youthmovies, 65 Days of Static, Foals and Blood Red Shoes and performing twice at 2007’s Glastonbury Festival.
Cats x 3 were soon gaining label interest and, after releasing a split single for Wolf Party records, decided their next release would be with Big Scary Monsters records. BSM has been releasing consistently innovative and inspiring records for years and the label seemed like an obvious choice for the band. The split EP with Oxford’s This Town Needs Guns (Sept ‘07) was a storming success and received rave reviews from the likes of NME, Rock Sound and Drowned in Sound. Huw Stephens invited both bands to record a Radio 1 Session, which was aired in early October.
The band is releasing a very limited edition vinyl on Irish label, The Richter Collective on the 2nd of October.
Support on the night comes from Kilkenny locals Moses Moorhouse and Indie Kids Can’t Dance. Moses Moorhouse, also known as Jack O’Leary, returns to play another of his powerful and inventive shows, his sweet vocals and captivating guitar work melting the coldest of hearts while Indie Kids Can’t Dance prepare to set the night off with their electrifying indie-influenced rock.
Doors open at 9pm with admission five euro.

The Guggenheim Grotto To See Out The Year

The Guggenheim Grotto will be the last KilkennyMusic.com promoted gig taking place in 2008, with the band set to make an appearance in Cleere’s Theatre in Kilkenny on December 20th.
Enjoying increasing amounts of airplay on the back of the release of ‘Happy The Man’ earlier this month, we’ve been working on finding a date for the lads to come back to Kilkenny and have settled on December 20th in the run up to Christmas.
While we didn’t get around to the Christmas party last year, it will make a nice occasion to see the band in Kilkenny again following their packed acoustic show earlier this summer.
Tickets on sale from next month.

We’re going to hand today’s Video Of The Day over to local act Decadation. This track, Retribution, won Best Song at the 2007 Battle Of The Bands. The band made it to the final again this year with South taking the winner’s crown.
Shot live at the final (Nikon S200 from the judges’ table), here they are in action last Sunday. Hopefully we’ll see them back again next year.

Muckers. Farmers. Battles. Bands. Kilkenny gigs. Out of town gigs. Ticket refunds. Festivals. Unhappy campers. Funny musicians. Carlow musicians. Politically charged songs. Rare birds.
Its all on this week’s podcast.
We’re onto 59, we’ve a new look website, some highlights (finally) from the September 11th One Take Sessions (nothing to do with “September 11th”) and a whole load of chat about the 2008 Battle Of The Bands Finals. Again, congratulations to the two winners on the day, South (overall winner) and Kerbstomp (runner up).
We’ve no song titles for you but you’ve got two tracks from Hamlet Sweeney and one each from Peter Brabazon and Joe Cleere.
So much to talk about and so little (49 minutes) time.
Until next week.
Enjoy.
