One Take Sessions July 31st - Tonight

July 31, 2008 by Ken McGuire

Tonight’s One Take Sessions, the last before September, continues in Cleere’s Theatre with news that Harry Rambles (resident in Whelans, Dublin, on Sunday nights) is replacing El Scamperino.

El Scamperino was due to appear with Walkperson, both acts on a joint tour for the end of July / August but due to ill health Sean (El Scamperino) won’t be making an appearance. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to have him at the ‘Sessions before the end of the year or into the 2009 season.

Tonight’s lineup will feature Harry Rambles, Michael Whelan, Walkperson and The Lions Mane.

Doors open in Cleere’s Theatre before 9:30pm with the first act taking to the stage at 9:30pm.

Good Tiger At The Pancake House

Good Tiger

Tomorrow night sees Problems At The Pancake House return to Cleere’s for the August Bank Holiday weekend with Good Tiger, So Cow and Sing Song all in tow.

Music from another galaxy, a sort of lo-fi science experiment in sound come to life, Good Tiger’s sound is vast and sprawling, giving the multi-instrumentalist Dave Holland (formerly one half of Blue Ghost, and leader of the short-lived but brilliant Split Lip) full scope to explore all the areas he has wandered into here and there, from time to time, over the years with his other groups.

The powerhouse percussionist Ger Cantwell (formerly of Gout and raucous instrumentalists, the 2 Fantastic 3) is also on board this ship with Holland, as is bass player supreme, Alan Montgomery (formerly of Dublin bands, The Dixons and Revelino). Listeners to Cormac Battle, Jenny Huston and Dan Hegarty’s radio shows will have heard some choice cuts from the group’s album The Dynamics of Alcatraz, getting regular plays from the gob-smacked DJs.

It’s funk, it’s soul, it’s electronica, it’s lo-fi, it’s Americana, and it’s rock and roll - but not as we know it. This is Cosmic Music for the 21st Century. Check out Good Tiger on MySpace.

So Cow could be described as “lo-fi with notions”. Recording his songs onto eight track cassette in a basement in a floodprone area of Seoul, South Korea, he continues on a quest to meld the finest of classic indie rock moves with a sprinkling of bullish audio experimentation. Experimentation borne of the fact that he remains oblivious to such odd and frightening terms as EQ, Compression and Frequencies, preferring instead to twist the knobs and see what happens. This “record and run” approach has spawned a monstrous number of recordings, each weirdly special and especially weird.

Sing Song
began their life as a duo: the dynamic vision of two young men, Danny and Cian, who refused to play to conventions and were eventually joined by Simon.

This will be the group’s second gig in Kilkenny after they played a beautiful and intimate set as a dup at the last Problems at the Pancake House. This time, however, Simon will be joining with the two with his mix of beeps, bips and bass.

See the PATPH MySpace for more or drop into Cleere’s tomorrow night (August 1st) from 9pm. Limited hand packaged CD available for the first few heads in the door with admission a mere five euro.

Parhelia

They’ve hit Kilkenny in the past and each time they’ve left a serious mark and resounding impression. Last time they were down (earlier this summer) I left with two EPs in my pocket and now there’s a third on the way with the release of Parhelia’s acoustic EP. The CD features some unplugged tracks recorded in Norway last year some time ago.

The acoustic EP, available from ParheliaBand.com for just €4 features the tracks

  1. Cronin
  2. Nervous Calm
  3. Summer Fades
  4. Bran

The first three tracks were recorded Live +Acoustic @ Jailhouse Studios Norway with the fourth track being the first the band recorded as Parhelia (recorded at Cosmic Studios Dublin).

Following the release of the EP, the band recently announced too the full time addition to the fold of session guitarist Phil Clarke. Parhelia are due back in the studio in October to record 6 new tracks, working towards the release of the new Parhelia album, slated for January 2009.

Queens Of The Stone Age with 3s and 7s, performed acoustic for 3voor12 in Amsterdam. Great tune and always a good band to see switch to the acoustic setup.

Next on the list, QOTSA for the One Take Sessions. Make it happen.

I can’t think if we’ve featured The Beatles on the Daily Video before, but there’s a first time for everything if not. That said, rumour has their one of two bands that nobody in the UK wants to hear played on radio any more. Can’t for the life of me think where I heard Paperback Writer at the weekend but here it is anyway, enjoy your Monday!
