VOTD: Journey ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ (Live)

July 26, 2007 by ken

It has to be done. Everybody - including YOU - needs a bit of Journey in their life. The song is on the go now some 26 years and is as popular now as it was back then, thanks in large part to the likes of Family Guy, Scrubs, The Sopranos (if you’ve seen the finale you’ll get me) and tons of other TV shows and campaigns of late. Hell, Ray Foley did his bit to get the song back up the charts, Don’t Stop Believing making it briefly to #1 in the US iTunes charts after the Sopranos finale aired in the US.

Give it a play, fantastic song. If you want to know the background of it, check here on Wikipedia.

Saving J Looking For A Bass Player

Saving J

Kilkenny based indie outfit Saving J are looking for a new bass player. The band launched their debut single ‘Bus Stop’ earlier this year and have been busy on the road since. Their current bassist departs in a few weeks for pastures new and whoever takes over his spot in the band must be up for the touring commitments including midweek and weekend gigs.

The band are due to play two Kilkenny dates in August (see the gig guide) and start touring from the end of the summer, hitting the Irish college circuit to promote the current single.

We’ve landed copies of recordings due for release next year and the band are certainly after finding “their sound” and are on the up and up. Recent appearances in the Music Factory in Carlow and Cypress Avenue in Cork (with Ham Sandwich) have seen them up the ante and draw in even more fans. Professionals all the way, they’re calling out for a bass player to join the ranks. If you think you have what it takes and want to audition for the band then contact 087 9381617. Want to hear what the band sound like? Have a listen to the debut single, Bus Stop, below.

A defeatist, as pointed out in the video, is someone who accepts failure as a matter of course. Definitely not these guys. They brought the house down in Dublin earlier this year, supported by Kilkenny’s own metal gods Slave Zero. Here’s your video for Tuesday, put a little hardcore sound in your diet with ‘Defeatist’ from Hatebreed.

Fun In Fundraiser? Flashback To A Devious Saturday

Jack O’Leary, Jane Murphy, Ken McGuire in action on Saturday Night

The Devious Theatre Company certainly know how to put the word ‘fun’ into ‘fundraiser’ as four fantastic local acts turned out in Cleere’s on Saturday night last to raise much needed funds for the Kilkenny based theatre company’s production of ‘Cannibal! The Musical’ in the Watergate Theatre this August.

People were warned that anything was possible for the night any the group held true to their word. First to take to the stage was Happy Medium frontman Ken McGuire, known for his work with KilkennyMusic.com and himself a part of The Devious Theatre Company. With a set list of new material including ‘Weary Is The King’ and ‘If You Could Return’ it was the final song of the set that had everyone on their feet singing and cheering as the packed house echoed every word of ‘Sweat’ by Inner Circle. The members of The Devious Choir (including John Morton, Kevin Mooney and Paddy Dunne), which had been formed five minutes before the show, gladly “gave it socks” as the night was truly under way.

Second to the stage was Gowran man Jack O’Leary, now trading under the name of Moses Moorhous. With cellist Jane Murphy and songstress Aisling O’Neill in tow, Jack performed a terrific set of original material coupled with his trademark story telling. Songs like ‘Doomsday River’ and ‘Blessed Ignorance Of Man’ had swiftly become fan-favourites. Known for is solo performances, the addition of the cello and backing vocals further compliment O’Leary’s already respected and matured unique sound on the stage.

One of the real treats of the night however was the Kilkenny debut of four-piece 40 Love, the combination of Conor Brett, Danny Coady, Liam Teehan and David Thompson creating a real twist in the musical cocktail of the night. Peddling the kind of country based, steeped in Americana, hard rock currently en vogue thanks to the likes of the Kings of Leon, the band made a huge impact with the likes of ‘Folsom Prison Blues’ and ‘Maggie’s Farm’. The vocal combination of Brett, Coady and Thompson coupled with the pseudo-funky bass lines provided by Teehan and the sharp timing and wizardry of Brett on the guitar had everyone in the now loaded venue jumping, whooping and cheering along to some of the finest tunes to come from across the water.

The headline slot on the night was reserved for Supernova Scotia, the brainchild of David Sheenan. Composed of Sheenan and some of the members of A Safe Dry Place the group have built up a massive internet following thanks in part to a unique combination of instruments from the harmonicas to synth organs, electronic and live drum beats, roaring electric guitar sounds and deep driven bass lines and inspiration from the likes of Kraftwerk, Death In Vegas, The Jackson 5 and Prince. Having played a low-key gig in Cleere’s Theatre on the Friday night with Queen Kong, the band let loose on Saturday night and didn’t disappoint. Friends and fans of the band sang along to every word and wouldn’t let the band leave the stage, encouraging a repeat of earlier tunes like ‘In The City’. Having firmly made an impact on the live circuit last night, the band are going to be back in town for the Problems At The Pancake House showcase night in Cleere’s Theatre on August 18th.

The night wouldn’t have been complete without some ‘Devious antics as early in the night Jack O’Leary ushered local artist Mick Minogue to the stage to provide face painting for the evening - one face painted for every song played on the night. Needless to say there were some strange looking creatures lurking around the bar afterwards.

The night was deemed as success by the group who will be performing the Irish premiere of ‘Cannibal! The Musical’ by Trey Park (of South Park) this time next month and we’ve been assured that the funds raised on the night have gone straight into the Cannibal budget! Tickets for Cannibal are available now from the Watergate Theatre by phoning 056 7761674 or check www.devioustheatre.com for all the details.

The first of the two shows gets underway just after 9:30pm in Cleere’s tonight as The Devious Theatre Company present not one, not two, or three, but four acts on a Saturday night bill as a fundraiser ahead of the group’s production of Cannibal! The Musical in The Watergate Theatre in August. On the lineup are KilkennyMusic.com and the Happy Medium’s Ken McGuire (who is also part of The Devious Theatre Company), Jack O’Leary (who paid a visit to the most recent One Take Sessions), 40-Love who make their Kilkenny debut and Supernova Scotia who will be performing a full on set (laptops included). Doors open at 9:30pm tonight, its a five euro admission for the full night and all proceeds go to The Devious Theatre Company based here in Kilkenny. If you’re feeling flush and want to dig a little deeper then don’t hesitate to offer up a donation!

Across the road in the Zoo Club the long awaited launch of ‘The Wrong Side Of Misery EP’ from Itchy Trigger Finger takes place with doors open from 9pm. The band are set to take to the stage some time around 10pm and will be performing up to 90 minutes tonight on their own before being joined by Revenant and Atrax Mantis tomorrow for an all-ages show at 4pm.

The EP has been been in production for long over a year and we’ve been backing it all the way and will continue to promote it throughout the tour but its great to see the cd finally released to the public. The five track release will be available for purchase from tonight priced at 7pm. The brand new ITFRock.com site is also set to launch in the coming week with all the tour details, band photos, news and music possible.

And if you want me…. ahhh. We used the CD version of Rilo Kiley’s ‘With Arms Outstretched’ in The Devious Theatre Company’s production of ‘Heart Shaped Vinyl’ and its a song that sticks out from the show, for me anyway. This video was recorded at a secret MySpace gig back in 2006 in the Hotel Cafe, January 29th 2006. For more, check out the Rilo Kiley MySpace. This is your Video of the Day.
